Guaranda, Ecuador

Guaranda, Ecuador was Johnson City's original sister city since 1964 by Johnson City Mayor Mary Ross McDowell. It is a beautiful town nestled in the Andean mountains at 8,000 feet altitude. A strong and vibrant Indian presence and agricultural productivity characterized Guaranda. The continuing relationship between the Greater Tri-Cities Sister Cities organization and Guaranda revolves around cultural and educational exchanges and medical training and assistance.

Visits to Ecuador have been by community leaders, researchers in political science, sociology and anthropology, and medical and nursing students.

Visits to Johnson City have been by Public Health Faculty, high school and college students, and musical groups.
